Pete King's Thoughts & Whereabouts: 9/9

Wednesday – September 9th
Washington, DC

9 A.M. – Republican Conference meeting in Cannon Caucus Room. Consensus is that the President’s healthcare plan is in bad shape.

10:30 a.m. – Meet in office with representatives of credit unions. Went well. They do a good job for the community.

11:15 a.m. – To CBS Studio at 400 North Capitol Street to tape Channel 2 interview with Marcia Kramer on the President’s speech tonight

12:15 p.m. – Back in office at 339 Cannon for interview for tonight’s Channel 7 Eyewitness News regarding tonight’s speech

12:45 p.m. – 2:15 p.m. – To House floor to give speeches on two 9/11 House resolutions. H.Res. 718 – “Recognizing September 11th as “National Day of Service and Remembrance” and H.Res. 722 – “Expressing the sense of the House regarding the September 11th attacks.”

3:30 p.m. – September 11th commemoration ceremony in Capitol. Speeches by House and Senate leaders. Music by Marine Corps band.

House Chamber
7:45 p.m. – 9:05 p.m. - The President’s speech on health care was well delivered but what he said doesn’t add up. He will provide health care to everyone and improve the health care for those who already have insurance and there won’t be any increase to the deficit! He was also needlessly confrontational, almost petulant. Still it was totally wrong to in any way harass or yell out at the President. My guess is that there will be a short term boost to the President but the poll numbers will start coming down again in a few days – unless he is serious about bipartisan negotiations.

9:15 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. – Back to Cannon Building for TV interviews with WCBS, WABC, Channel 12 and BBC.
