Congressman Pete King Speaks at Suffolk County American Legion Breakfast

Today I had the privilege of speaking in Brentwood at the American Legion's Annual Suffolk County Legislative Breakfast. American Legion members from all over Suffolk attended including County Commander Bill Farley of Lindenhurst and Past County Commander Tom Wagner of Bayport. I thanked the Legion members for their dedicated service not only in the military but also in the Legion after their active duty service was concluded. I stressed my consistent support for veterans throughout my years in Congress including leading the fight to bring the G.I. Bill of Rights into the 21st Century and increasing programs to treat veterans and their family members for PTSD. As far as I am concerned, America can never fully repay the debt we owe to our veterans!

President Trump's speech at the UN was a masterful articulation of America's leadership role in the very dangerous world which he inherited. I fully agree with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who said that in his entire "experience with the UN" he has "never heard a bolder or more courageous speech" as "President Trump spoke the truth about the great dangers facing our world."

This speech was a wakeup call to the world's diplomats who are obsessed with endless talk and process and petrified of making real decisions. Similar to the self-congratulatory lefties who populate the audience at the Emmy awards, so many of these diplomats exist in mind constricting silos. President Trump called out those countries who persist in dealing with North Korea, who ignore the horrors of the Iranian regime and are silent about Venezuela's oppression and socialist dysfunction. The President also reminded the UN that while the United States is only 1 of 193 countries in the UN, we pick up 22% of the tab. This is the type of outer-borough straight talk which was long overdue.

Last night Rosemary and I had the privilege of attending a diplomatic reception hosted by the President and First Lady at the Palace Hotel on E 51st Street in Manhattan. Besides the ambassadors and other foreign dignitaries who attended, there were the President's key foreign policy advisors including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and General HR McMaster who heads the National Security Council. I spent a good amount of time with NYPD Commissioner Jimmy O'Neill discussing all the logistics that go into providing security for so many world leaders.

President Trump then spoke and thanked everyone for attending, saying how proud he was to represent New York and America. After the President concluded his remarks, I spoke with him briefly and commended him on his speech to the General Assembly saying it projected the American leadership which the world needed to hear. God Bless America!!
