Congressman King Speaks to MacArthur High School AP Government Class

Levittown, NY - Congressman Pete King (R-Seaford) speaking to the AP Government class at MacArthur High School in Levittown. I discussed my role in Congress as well as the upcoming election. An impressive group who were very informed on major national issues.

This past weekend the Wantagh Little League honored the memory of NYPD Officer Scott Gadell who was murdered in the line of duty 31 years ago. I was proud to join with Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney and Scott's brother Jeff and his family in this commemoration ceremony.

Scott Gadell was a true hero shot down by a vicious killer in the streets of Far Rockaway in 1986. What made this murder even more tragic is that Scott was killed when his assailant executed him with a 9 millimeter automatic as Scott was trying to reload after he had fired all 6 bullets from his .38 caliber police revolver. (This murder was a major factor in the NYPD's subsequent decision to replace the .38 caliber with the 9 millimeter.)

Raised in Wantagh and an Army veteran, Scott was only 22 when he was murdered. I was Nassau County Comptroller at the time and was among the many mourners who attended Scott's funeral. (I distinctly remember how shaken and distraught Mayor Koch was.)

Obviously this was a tragedy which had a brutal and lasting impact on Scott's family. It was a privilege for me to talk with Jeff at the ceremony as he shared his memories of his brother. I commend the Wantagh Little League for honoring Scott Gadell's memory. It is important for people to realize and remember the brave men and women in blue who put their lives on the line each day so that the rest of us can be safe. NYPD Officer Scott Gadell RIP.

Paid for by Pete King for Congress.
