Great way to start the day this morning. Stopped by 7/11 on Park Avenue in Wantagh to pick up the papers and talk with my good friend Warner. As always Warner was in great spirits and somehow smiling his way through the pandemic.

Going out to my car a guy called out to me and wished me well in retirement. Then he brought back warm memories by telling me that he was retired NYPD and that my father had been his Commanding Officer in the Police Academy. He said very good things about my father and went on to say he was in the legendary “Fighting 69th” Infantry Regiment the same time as me. I thanked him for his service and for taking the time to say hello.

Felt like I had hit the Trifecta: upbeat conversation with Warner; memories of my father; and added memories of the 69th. At a time of chaos and division I had found an oasis of good people and memories.

Outstanding sir. Outstanding! My father also NYPD! He loved the Armory and was so proud of his Irish roots sir. When the terrorists hit our a nation that day my dad was already retired NYPD. He was on his way in for a minor surgery. He and my brother turned around and as a National Guardsmen he reported to the Armory as a 63 year old. Proud to be inside the very hall of the 69th regiment. He served for over hundred days! God Bless the USA. God Bless all whom served. God Bless the Irish and God Bless you sir. Who was your father, Congressman? I just retired after 30 years in the NYPD, and my last assignment was at the Police Academy.
